Laos is a Southeast Asian country of extraordinary beauty bestowed by varied landscapes that alternate from north to south, ranging from high peaks such as Mount Annam to the valley of the Mekong River that runs through the country. Years of isolation have made it possible to preserve not only the environmental but also the architectural and cultural heritage such as French colonial architecture, Buddhist temples and tribal settlements in the hills, elements that contribute to the richness of this still little-known land. Most common tourist itineraries, in fact, limit a visit to the country to a short stay in Luang Prabang, the ancient royal capital, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which preserves as many as 32 Buddhist temples. But push further and you can explore hidden treasures such as the Plain of Jars (dating back to 500 A.D.), Spoon Village where locals turn discarded unexploded ordnance into spoons, and the Sacred Caves of Pak Ou, which preserves more than 1,000 Buddha statues, as well as the colonial-style buildings of the capital VientIane. Exploring Laos is an experience that lingers in the heart thanks in part to a welcoming and smiling population. Skilled artisans sell their prized creations in local markets where silk, wood, and terracotta hold sway. The land is not very fertile and many practice subsistence farming by cultivating small green areas for personal needs. Laos, then, is an enchanted and authentic place, thanks precisely to the long geographic isolation that has made it possible to preserve a traditional way of life and a culture unafraid of outside influences. If you come to these parts, let yourself be contaminated by this unique culture where the term globalization has no reason to exist in the vocabulary.
