The lake is associated with a fascinating legend : in a time long past, the heavens entrusted the Vietnamese Emperor, Le Thai To, with a magic sword to drive the invading Chinese out of Vietnam. Once the task was accomplished, he went around the lake and a giant turtle rose from the waters, taking the sword and returning it to its divine owners; hence the name, “Lake of the Returned Sword.” The walk ends at a local restaurant where a welcome dinner awaits us.
